The Mid-Tennessee Chapter of Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) is a commercial construction related association serving the middle Tennessee area. Founded in 1971, it is the largest commercial construction organization in this area serving general contractors, specialty contractors, suppliers and associate members.
ABC members are united in the common belief that "merit shop construction" offers the best value to construction owners because it champions the finest ideals of free enterprise - an open and competitive marketplace. This philosophy permits construction projects to be built on time with exceptional quality and safe jobsites and in a cost-effective manner.
The members of ABC have built some of the most significant projects in this area as well as around the country. In recognition of this incredible record of achievement, the Chapter inaguarated in 1996 the "Construction Awards of Excellence" program to recognize the entire construction team - construction owners, designers and contractors.
Construction companies submit entries that are reviewed by an out-of-state judging team familiar with construction processes on a variety of criteria and select the winning entries.
Each year there are a number projects entered in a variety of categories ranging in size from $1 million to over $150 million.
The major categories are:
- Institutional and Health Care
The judges look for innovative, high quality work where safety plays an important role in the overall construction process. In fact, safety plays an enormous part in the competition and counts for 1/3 of the possbile points to be earned.
The project is profiled in notebook form and includes a narrative and description of the construction process which contains information such as:
- New Processes Used
- Time and Space Restrictions
- Other Special Challenges
Other items included in the entry are:
- Samples of Safety Materials used on the Project
- Press Releases
- Other Supporting Information
Awards are presented to the contractors, owners, and design fimrs at the annual Awards of Excellence Banquet. The winning entries are showcased in a "video" presentation and are featured in the Nashville Business Journal. "Sneak peak" copies of the special Nashville Business Journal supplement are provided to all in attendance at the Banquet.
Contractors who win at the Chapter level are then eligible to enter their
project(s) in the ABC National Excellence in Construction competition where they will compete with contractors across the United States. Winners are announced at a special event and featured on the National ABC website.
Members of the Mid-Tennessee Chapter of ABC can be proud of the legacy they are leaving not only for Nashville, Tennessee, but the United States as a whole with their award-winning projects.
